If you have wood flooring in your home, count yourself lucky. Hardwood floors are easier to clean and maintain, and they can be refinished if they become damaged. Not to mention the fact that they are classy and attractive. If you have wood floors, it’s a good idea to know how to keep them in good shape. Keep reading to learn more about cleaning your hardwood floors.

1. Vacuum regularly

One of the best ways to care for hardwood floors is to vacuum them regularly. It’s important to use a vacuum head designed for wood flooring, and not to use harsh attachments like a beater brush. If your vacuum comes with a brush head attachment, you can use this to clean along the baseboards for an extra-clean finish. Whatever you do, it’s important to vacuum your wood floors regularly.

2. Use a swiffer sweeper

The swiffer sweeper is a great tool for dusting, and it’s especially great for hardwood floors. The thin head can reach under furniture and into small corners, picking up trapped hair and dust. If you own a swiffer sweeper, try using it after you vacuum and see how much dust your vacuum missed. You can also use it to dust cobwebs from the ceiling and to clean other hard-to-reach areas.

3. Use a microfiber cloth

If you don’t have a swiffer sweeper, or if you don’t want to purchase the disposable cloths, you can use a microfiber cloth to dust your hardwood floors. These reusable soft cloths work the same way the swiffer does, without the need to repurchase. Simply toss them in the washing machine when you’re done, and the cloth will come out sparkling clean and ready to re-use. This is a great option if you like to choose eco-friendly cleaning solutions.

4. Damp mop with a gentle solution

When it comes to mopping, there are a few options. You can use a sponge mop and bucket filled with solution and water, or a microfiber “damp” mop which uses very little cleaning solution. Whatever you prefer, make sure to use a cleaner that’s safe for wood. Many people choose to use Murphy’s oil soap, a brand that’s made especially for wood floors. You can also use water and vinegar, and if you don’t like the smell of vinegar, you can add some essential oils to the mix to freshen things up. If you mop regularly, you may like to use a spray mop or microfiber mop. However, if you mop infrequently, it’s important to use a sponge mop as this is best for heavy duty cleaning.

5. Clean up spills immediately

If you have children or pets, or even if it’s only adults in the household, spills are bound to happen. It’s important to wipe up any liquids from your floors to prevent warping. Even if you can’t clean it properly at the moment, using an old towel to mop up the extra liquid will go a long way toward preserving your wood floors.
