Italian masterclass skilled shoemaker, Giuliano applying vegetable glue to the iconic Vara bow

Young Salvatore made his first pair of shoes at nine. Since then, he had found his true calling. When it comes to luxury shoes, what comes to mind is the Italian brand. Having made a multitude of fine and exquisite women and men shoes, it continues to allure purveyors of inexorable craftmanship and luxury shoes to the forefront.

Giuliano was flown in from Italy to Kuala Lumpur to showcase to the guest the process of making a pair of suede Ferragamo Carla. Atop the makeshift workstation were pieces of cut-out suedes in teal, camel and purple, Vara bows, plant-derived adhesives, and shoe-making tools. What astounded most guests were his act of placing very fine nails clamped down between his lips while attending to other details to the shoes. Giuliano, a shoemaker for 55 years however, felt almost at ease, a stark contrast to the many guests spectating the shoe-making process. His fingers though not as fine as the female counterpart were nothing short of being adept. His light, short and swift motions while applying adhesives didn't serve to smudge the fragile suede with any glue stains.

"Asians typically have shorter and wider feet compared to the Westerners whose feet are longer and narrower," says one of the store attendant. While shoe sales made up the large part of sales, Ferragamo also sells other leathers goods like handbags, belts, wallets, and fragrances etc. Salvatore Ferragamo is also celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and its much coveted Vara pump; the mid-heeled patent ballet-style shoe with a grosgrain bow and metallic disk, is now customizable through the L'Icona project. The Vara easily makes for one of the most stylish travel footwear. It's chic, lightweight and comfortable regardless if you decided to go completely flat or with a block heel.
