"Illustration and designing are two different arenas altogether, but I want to work in both of them" - Anna Tuomaala

Hi Anna! Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a Finnish-born London based womenswear designer and fashion illustrator. I studied and graduated from womenswear design and at the moment I work as a freelance designer for one company, but I do some illustration work as well. I consider Illustration and designing as two different industries, but I want to work in both of them.

When did you discover your passion for art and design?
I guess that was when I was in elementary school and I was about 8 years old when I started to take part to after school sewing club. It was a lead by a lady who cut out the fabrics according to any sketch and fabric given to her and guided how to sew those garments as well. I did that for quite many years and I gradually started to make clothes for myself more independently. I actually started out very technically. My passion for art I also discovered at quite young age as well, since my parents were doing fine art. I have been drawing as long as I can remember and enjoyed a lot of doing it.

We had a field day just browsing your portfolio. Where do you get your inspirations from?
Sometimes I try to illustrate my own work and sometimes I like to pay attention more on styling, details, and hair, how the fabric folds etc.

What do you have to tell from your work?
I am not really thinking about that much when I work. I do like very traditional techniques such as pencil drawing that I like to mix with other visuals.

If you could only work with one colour, which one would it be, and why?
I guess that would be black since I would not get bored with that too easily and it has the biggest intensity.

If given a chance, who would you want to collaborate with, and why?
I would like to work more with magazines.

What would you do if you win a million dollars?
I would probably set up my own company and buy a property.
