Lacey Berry talks to us about preparing for the launch of the upcoming Spring/Summer 2013 collection in which her inspiration is a modern take on the Native American jewelry. She collaborated with talented photographer Everett Sullivan for the lookbooks on her website.

We interviewed her recently and was immediately blown away by the exquisite spin of well-played aztec designs, statement bibs and tiered necklaces. Our favourite is the red collar-cum-necklace with gold accents.

Hi Lacey! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello! My name is Lacey Berry. I am a jewelry designer from the US. I was born with a red afro and a love of painting. The Afro has since diminished, but my love of art has not. Beyonce is my spirit animal.

When did you discover your love for designing?
I discovered my love for designing around the age of 15. My school had a strict dress code so I would have to get creative with my outfits in order to feel unique. I also used to design my prom dresses and have my mother help me make them. They were interesting to say the least...

What do you have to tell from your designs?
I want my designs to tell a story of possibility. The designs are meant to be a tool for self expression. I want the wearer to feel as though the jewelry speaks to their own story.

Which of your projects are you most proud of?
Besides the jewelry, I would have to say the photos for each season’s lookbook. I style them myself and work with my friend Everett Sullivan who photographs them. He is so talented and it is always thrilling to see what the end result will be. My expectations are always exceeded.

What are your favourite tools to work with?
My Apple computer, Adobe Illustrator, and anything that sparkles. I am trained as a graphic designer so I love the ease of creating in a digital format. As for the things that sparkle, they change from season to season. My initial idea for creating the line was to take the most beautiful parts of a piece of clothing and make it something that can translate from outfit to outfit. A beautiful piece of beading on a dress can only be worn in one way. I prefer to separate it from the garment for more versatility. It will look equally lovely paired with a leather jacket or a silk dress. Sparkle will always be my M.O.

If you could only work with one colour, which one would it be, and why?
Red. I love it for its versatility. It can be both bold and elegant at the same time, depending on the shade. It is such a powerful color. You can’t help but feel sassy when you’re wearing it.

What would you do if you win a million dollars?
First I would give some away to my friends and family. I try to be as practical as possible, so I would attempt to save as much of it as I could. Attempt being the operative word. As a lady I would have to buy some beautiful shoes. That probably goes without saying...
