Find out how and why in our exclusive interview!
Hi Joanna! Tell us a bit of yourself.
I’m 26 years old and live in Manhattan with my boyfriend Greg and our cat, June. I grew up in Damascus, Maryland and have been drawing for as long as I can remember. As an undergrad, I studied art and art history at Washington College.
While still in school, I taught myself to sew and started my own business designing handbags from my dorm room. Upon graduation, I decided to take my hobby seriously and applied to Parsons School of Design. In the fall of 2008, I was accepted into the AAS Fashion Studies program and moved to New York City to continue my education.
I graduated in 2010 with a fashion design degree and currently work as an assistant fashion designer. In my spare time, I combine my love of fashion, art, design, and creativity into an illustrated blog under my own name.
Where do you get your ideas and inspiration from?
I’m inspired by the city and the energy it creates. There is always something happening here, and there’s a constant push to keep up. I like drawing the people and things I see in New York as well as fashionable finds on my favorite blogs and style sites.
What are your favourite tools to work with?
I use Prismacolor colored pencils and Copic Sketch markers for my illustrations. All my drawings are done on Canson marker paper, it’s the best for smooth blending. I have been experimenting a bit with watercolors recently but am still working up the courage to post them on my blog!
Who do you dream of working/collaborating with, and why?
It would be amazing to collaborate with an up-and-coming lifestyle/fashion magazine. I’d jump at the chance to do weekly or monthly illustrations. It would be a great way to build up a body of work outside my blog and expose my sketches to the world.
What are you currently working on? Any major projects that we could look forward to?
I’m always taking in the city and sketching ideas for my blog. I plan on someday opening an online shop and selling my illustrations as prints and accessories.
You participated in a design contest which was organised by Bergdorf
Goodman and Christian Louboutin, and are one of the winners! Congratulations! How has it inspired you?
Thank you! It was definitely an adventure and has inspired me in so many ways. Interpreting one of Louboutin’s 20th anniversary shoes into a gown was a great challenge. I was beside myself when British Vogue featured my design sketch on their website… the pressure was on!
I learned just how much I could push myself and in the end, be able to see my hard work pay off. Winning the competition gave me that dose of validation to keep working, creating, and moving forward. It was also amazing to meet Mr. Louboutin and have him sign my winning dress!
If you could only work with one colour, which one would it be and why?
Gray. I love capturing tiny details in more realistic drawings with just a graphite pencil and kneeded eraser. There is something so striking about a life-like portrait in shades of gray. I drew a lot of them in college for fun and will occasionally go back to this style for my blog posts.
What would you do if you win a million dollars?
I’m at a point in my life where I’m trying to get ahead of things, so I’d probably pay back my amazing parents for supporting my student loans and save the rest for when I’m old enough to know what to do with it! Except maybe just a little bit for some new Louboutins =)
