Hi Sandy! Tell us a bit about yourself!
Well, I'm artist and fashion illustrator, Sandy M. I live in the beautiful state of Michigan, filled with lakes and absolutely gorgeous sandy summers. Beach time is easy to come by here! I am married and my husband and I just purchased and are moving into a pretty, historic home on the water in June. The house sits in the heart of the city and is walking distance to downtown and I'm thrilled that my home studio there that will face the water and has French doors that will open onto flower gardens.

I specialize in custom fashion illustration and illustrations of all things lovely and chic such as ballgowns, chandeliers, city windows, townhouses, pretty hotels, perfumes, stilettos, jewelry, desserts, shopping bags, sunglasses, lipsticks and more. I created my own little word for these pretty things I love to illustrate: "ooh la frou frou." That is also the name of my illustration blog.

What kickstarted your love for illustration?
I have been drawing since childhood, so I suppose you could say my love of illustration kickstarted naturally at a very young age. As I grew up, I found that my favorite high school classes were always art-related and it only felt natural that I would pursue art and illustration in college courses and in my choice of career.

Where do you get your inspirations from?
Literally everywhere. I am always inspired by cities like New York and Paris. I can be inspired by spotting a girl sipping a latte at a coffee shop or by a row of taxis passing by. I can be inspired by a cute beach bag or a beautiful settee or chaise I spot in a magazine, a beautiful storefront, townhouse, a pretty luggage carrier at a hotel. They're all my food for inspiration. Fashion magazines are required reading for me and always provide inspriration!

How did you come up with the idea for your City Girls?
Two years ago, when I started my illustration business, I started with the card line only. I created illustrations of eight chic city girls to be the stars of this card line and called it "Ooh La Frou Frou," with the thought that it would be a great way to continually illustrate the pretty things I love to illustrate.

As all good stories go, however, growth happens! During the last year, with a now-booming custom fashion illustration client list, my career is evolving into much more than simply a card line, things are changing in an exciting way! Because of those changes, I'll be taking some time this summer to create a brand new website and blog design that better encompasses that growth and the webnsite will be the landing page for Sandy M Illustration, offering custom illustration as well as my illustrations placed on various items such as prints, calendars and more. I'm starting to explore manufacturers for new items that could carry my illustrations now!

What are you currently working on? Any major projects that we can look forward to?
The following are a few of the most recent things that have just left and will soon be on my art desk:
I recently completed a custom illustration commission for one of the St. Regis Hotels that is to appear on the menu of a new restaurant venue off their lobby;
I just completed two custom illustration commissions for Post Frosting Rainboots ... In the first, I brought their logo girl to life by illustrating her walking through a city in the rain (so new it's not even available on their site yet!) and the second is an illustration of their Crown Rainboots walking across their facebook page ~ http://www.facebook.com/Poshfrosting ;)

Next up that I'll be creating: a custom illustration commission of a tiffany-blue bakery, based on Breakfast at Tiffany's, with windows full of goodies and Audrey sitting in front with a cupcake (how fun is all that?)

Which of your projects are you most proud of?
That's such a difficult question, truly. Each illustration that I do I can honestly say I'm proud of and they are all kind of like my babies when they leave the studio!

Where is the one place on Earth you have dreamed of visiting?
Paris first... then perhaps Italy and Greece!

If you could only work with one colour, which one would it be and why?
Pink, I think. It seems to appear somewhere in many of my illustrations, even if its simply on the lips of a fashion illustration!

What would you do if you win a million dollars?
Travel, most CERTAINLY. And I'd make sure I created the most perfect studio possible someplace where it's perpetually summertime. Any ideas of where that should be? ;)

In closing, if anyone is interested in commissioning a custom illustration they can drop me an e-mail at artist@sandramarkwalder.com
